Insights from the Interview
The drummer for legendary hardcore band DC DIY, which includes Canty, Ian MacKaye, Guy Picciotto, and Joe Lally, makes a guest appearance in a new video interview with the magazine White Lake Productions and talked about Fugazi and the possibility of a reunion.
“There’s always a chance we’ll get together again, and I mean it’s getting less and less likely, but there have been times over the last 22 years when we’ve gotten together and played sometimes for a week at a time, and we always see each other around town and are always working on other re-release projects,” Canty shared.
He continued: “I mean, we’re just involved in each other’s lives a lot, so, you know, it’s not up to me whether we get the band back together. If it were up to me, we would play, but it’s not that easy.”
The Legacy of Fugazi
Formed in 1986 following the disbandment of MacKaye’s band Minor Threat, Fugazi became well known in the hardcore scene for its DIY spirit, releasing all of its music through the hardcore scene. Discord reports – Independent label MacKaye – and their priorities in providing affordable ticket prices, as well as their emphasis on creating community in the scene.
The band has released six studio albums throughout their career, the last of which was 2001’s The Argument. Fugazi went on an “indefinite hiatus” after finishing a UK tour in 2002, following three sold-out shows at London’s O2 Forum in Kentish Town.
In a previous interview in 2011 with the magazine Blog: Getting Closer to Oblivion, MacKaye said the band was “offered an insane amount of money to get back together” but shared that “it’s not the money that’s going to bring us back together, we’re only going to play music together if we want to play music together and time has allowed that.”
In 2019, Lally and Canty were interviewed by the magazine Louder Sound and discussed the possibility of reuniting, with Lally saying: “You never want to say never about anything, because how can you say that about the future? But there doesn’t seem to be enough time for that because the four of us would have to spend a lot of time together to decide, ‘Should we play the old songs?’ ‘Who are we now?’ – What now? We’re not the kind of band that gets together and just rehearses old songs for two hours and goes out and plays them, makes some money and goes home.”
Canty added: “If we were to get together again, it would have to be out of a creative spirit. It would be different if we were together again.”
