Now, he has returned with “Sorry, Cancer!”, a Cuttled Freestyle that features a notable Mike Rapit. The track includes bold boasts and, in the last verse, he reveals he is in a new relationship. “I told the boys, I think that I met my wife / child, if you had a child, then you are preparing for life,” he raps.

He’s also using the track to address the criticism he received earlier this year related to his association with McDonald’s on a food advertising campaign. “I heard that they want to hang me in order to dry me in order to salute,” he raps. “The world may never love you again, but my mother will be.”

Controversy and Performances

In February, Stormzy reacted to the “perverted narrative” surrounding the McDonald’s debate, after many suggested that the movement for boycotts, refusals, and sanctions (BDS) supported a global boycott against the fast-food franchise due to its ties to Israeli forces.

The rapper, who has been vocal in his support for Palestine, had previously shared a post on social media in October 2023 that called for Free Palestine. However, he later clarified, “I did not archive the post where I showed my support for Palestine—my reason for archiving many IG posts last year was different.”

He continued, “The brands I work with cannot dictate my actions, and they don’t tell me what to do; otherwise, I wouldn’t collaborate with them. I conduct my own research on all the brands I work with, gather my own information, form my own opinions, and reach my own conclusions before entering into business.”

In other news, Stormzy will headline the Roskilde Festival in Denmark this summer, alongside Charlie XCX, Olivia Rodrigo, and Nine Inch Nails. Find tickets here.

In a four-star review of “This is what I mean,” NME commented: “There’s a bit of disappointment that we don’t hear Stormzy flaunt his production skills more often, yet this record will never serve as a reconstruction of ‘Hard is the Head’ or ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ for immediate grime hits.”

“Nevertheless, hard-hitting lyricism is still present: ‘DNA,’ ‘My Presidents,’ ‘Tuning into my opus Magnum.’ A snippet of conversation wraps up the track, emphasizing Stormzy’s contribution to British music: ‘The road you are going now, you are paving a lane. This is the way for all these people to follow.’ With “This is what I mean,” Stormzy continues to carve his path forward: another goal checked off his list.”
