New Remix Details

The cover is part of the new remix version of Robert Smith and the last album, Songs of a Lost World, which was critically recognized last year. The album, entitled “Mixes of the Lost World”, has previously featured Four Tet’s remix of the single “ONE”, and includes contributions from OKENFOLD, Moore Masa, frequent collaborators Mogwai, former 65daySofstic members, and more.

Today (May 2), the latest preview was released in the form of the Varsong cover, crafted by Deftones’ frontman Chino Moreno.

The new version largely retains the charm and atmosphere of the original track, while introducing a slightly more ominous tone. It peels back the layers of the “Songs of the Lost World” rendition to offer a more stringent, mechanically driven approach.

“I chose a ‘vansong’ for remixing because it is one of those slow, thoughtful musical works that have always drawn me to healing music,” explained Moreno. “My aim with this remix was to strip away some of the organic instrumentation and incorporate rhythmic, mechanical percussion along with sharp vocals to reveal a cold/anti-utopian essence of the song, while preserving the core beauty of the original.”

Collaboration History and Future Plans

This isn’t the first instance where Moreno and The Cure have collaborated. In 2020, Robert Smith shared the TEENGER remix for Deftones’ ”White Pony” album, titled “Black Stallion”, and prior to that, he lent his vocals for tracks like “Float + Boys Cry.”

In a five-star review of “Songs of the Lost World”, which was hailed as one of our best albums of 2024, NME remarked: “Is it pronounced? Yes, but the sound possesses enough heart and richness to place these songs among the best of The Cure.”

“The frontman hinted that two additional records may emerge, yet ‘Songs of the Lost World’ feels sufficient for the anticipation we survived, perhaps becoming the most personal album in Smith’s career. Mortality may loosen, but it’s in colors of black and gray on the grave.”

As for new material from The Cure, Smith confirmed that the album “Companion Piece” for “Lost World,” titled “Ready to Go,” may be shared prior to the yet-to-be-announced world tour in 2025. He also mentioned that the group is working on a considerable amount of material, including another record filled with “completely random things.”
