Incident Overview
The footage of Weezer’s bassist Scott Shriner holding and “shooting” a gun was released by the LAPD following a recent arrest.
Gillian Schrainer, an author who writes under the pseudonym Gillian Lauren and is also the wife of bassist Shriner, was taken into custody in Los Angeles on April 8 after sustaining a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were not involved in the incident when one of the suspects attempted to enter Schrainer’s property.
Reports indicate that Schrainer shot at the suspect and subsequently pointed a gun at the officers, refusing to lower it when asked. This led to an officer-involved shooting, resulting in an officer suffering a shoulder injury.
Schrainer fled to her home but was later treated at the hospital and then placed in custody. She has since been “booked for attempted murder,” as confirmed by the LAPD. A 9mm pistol was later discovered in her residence.
Video Evidence Released
Now, two weeks after the incident, the LAPD has released video footage which allegedly shows Lauren Rush handling and shooting a pistol while in her backyard.
In several bodycam videos uploaded yesterday on YouTube (April 25), officers can be heard repeatedly shouting at a woman identified by the LAPD as Lauren. They are positioned behind a fence, making the woman difficult to see from the video’s angle.
Officers shouted multiple times for the woman to drop the weapon. By the end of the exchange, one officer identified himself as “police,” while another stated that he belonged to the California Highway Patrol.
Another video shows Lauren exiting her house holding a black gun and moving around the perimeter. It captures her handling and firing the pistol, though recorded at a distance and somewhat blurred.
After what appeared to be a brief standoff, Lauren left the premises. According to bodycam footage, an officer then remarked, “Oh, she hit him,” just before the police opened fire.
A 22-minute video labeled by the LAPD as crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation states that the incident occurred around 3:55 PM on April 8. Officers surrounded Lauren’s area in pursuit of multiple suspects involved in a nearby road accident, suspecting they were hiding in residential yards.
Approximately an hour after the shooting incident, Lauren exited her home and was arrested without resistance, as stated by the police. She was taken to the hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her hand. Following the incident, she was charged with attempted murder. Reports indicate that she later posted a bail of $1 million and has since been released from custody, with her court date set for April 30. Katya Stone reported.
Official Statements and Reactions
“While being in the backyard of one residence, the officers observed a woman in a neighboring backyard armed with a pistol,” stated LAPD commander Alex Chogioji, referring to Lauren’s connection to Shrainer, though she is professionally known as Lauren.
“The officers gave Schrainer repeated verbal commands to drop the gun, but she did not comply,” Chogioji added. “A few moments later, Schrainer fired the weapon at the officers, resulting in one officer being shot.”
Chogioji further stated that investigators recovered the 9mm Glock pistol and shell casings from the residence. The YouTube video also includes several 911 calls made during the incident. One call appears to be from someone inside the house with Lauren after she was shot.
The caller informed the operator that Lauren had been shot amid a police pursuit. In the background, Lauren’s voice can be heard, explaining her account of the event: “I had a gun, and he said, ‘Put down this gun. Put down this gun.’ I said, ‘Put your fucking gun down.’ And then he shot me,” says Lauren. “There are three men on the other side of this fence.”
Following the incident, Weezer performed at the Coachella Festival, having been added to the lineup at the last minute. They did not address the situation during their performance.
Schrainer briefly commented on the matter before the show, confirming that both he and Weezer would still perform at the California festival. “She’s okay, thank you for asking,” said the bassist, while declining to provide further details about his wife’s situation. “See you at Coachella,” he added.
In other news, during their set at Coachella, the band announced an upcoming Weezer film.
Journalist Jeff Snyder revealed that the film will be a documentary featuring Keanu Reeves as a villain, blending elements of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
