The South African singer performed during the second weekend of Coachella on Friday (April 18), captivating fans with the first glimpse of a new, untitled track from her upcoming album.

Following her performance, there were reports that she paid homage to Spears with her choice of outfit on stage.

Tila donned a pair of stylish denim shorts paired with a green bra, which, as some fans noted, bore a striking resemblance to one of Spears’ most iconic outfits worn during her performance of “Slave 4 U” at the 2001 VMAs.

In response to a post on X/Twitter, discussing her resemblance to the pop icon, Tila remarked, “I love her, but I just thought that the outfit flies … no inspiration.”

Tila’s Rising Star Status

Tila’s debut album landed at No. 19 on Nme’s 50 Best Albums of 2024 list, with the review stating: “The debut album of the South African pop princess fulfills a great promise of her breakthrough, which earned Grammy recognition, featuring contributions from TEMS and Travis Scott. It’s a fresh, club-ready blend of R&B, Dancehall, Amapiano, and Afrobeats, all expertly crafted by Tyla.”

In a conversation with a star last March, she emphasized the need for increased attention on African artists. “I just feel that everything is so new, and all are different, but we have an atmosphere that comes with us. Like Amapiano, this is a whole genre that we created back home in South Africa, and there are dance movements in it: it is a whole movement.”

“We ourselves created this, but now others enjoy it, and I like it. I like that people see the other side of Africa. People see it as it is, including artistry and creativity.”

Upcoming Britney Spears Biopic

Regarding Britney, last summer, Universal Pictures announced that Spears’ memoir A Woman in Me will serve as the basis for a new biographical film about the pop star, with John M. Chu (Wicked, In the Heights, Crazy Rich Asians) attached as director.

Chu later hinted that he had a “initial concept” for the film’s narrative. “I think this is a lot about how we relate to people, especially young stars we think we own, women, and mothers,” he mentioned.

Since the film’s announcement, Millie Bobby Brown has expressed her desire to portray Spears, but also acknowledged that this is not solely her story.
