The Cultural Impact of “Brat”
Following its release last year, “Brat” rapidly transformed into a cultural sensation. The idea of “Brat” Summer, along with simplistic works of Lime Green, became a meme as fans worldwide embraced the album’s hedonistic aesthetics and attitude.
The album’s impact transcended the realm of pop music, even reaching Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, prompting political experts to attempt, yet struggle, to articulate the album’s essence.
Recently, Charlie has declared the official end of “Brat” Summer, passing the torch to a new generation of artists.
During her closing set at Coachella on Saturday (April 19), Charlie performed her collaboration with Icona Pop: “I Like It,” as a massive screen on stage displayed the message: “Maybe the time has come for another species of summer?” alongside a list of artists and directors positioned to take on this year.

The featured artists include those with recent projects or upcoming releases, such as Lord, Addison Rae, Pincaters, Chaim, Pulpa, Eidan Zamari, Jung Lin, Ethel Cain, David Cronenberg, Kali Uchis, Genius Partum, Sean Price Williams, Rosalía, and Ari Aster.
Also mentioned were Caroline Polachek, Paul Thomas Anderson, Joachim Trier, These New Puritans, Haley Benton Gates, Tourism, A$AP Rocky, Darren Aronofsky, Blood Orange, Bon Iver, and Celine Song.
Summer 2024 and Beyond
As images from the performance began circulating online, Charlie shared them in her Instagram stories, seemingly confirming the transition of the torch.
In other news, two performances were highlighted during her weekend, including a lively performance by Addison Rae for their remix of “von Dutch.” Last week, the singer participated in a collection of artists featured on the album “Brat” Remix—“Brat and completely different, but still Brat”—delighting the audience alongside Lord, Troye Sivan, and Billie Eilish.
She concluded the show with another mysterious message displayed on the giant screen above the stage, stating: “Thank you very much, Coachella. Does this mean summer has finally ended???? This moment will last forever …”
As the lights dimmed, the screen illuminated with: “Please do not let it end.”
In a four-star review of “Brat,” NME noted: “All this paints a picture of where XCX stands in 2024. The pain of growth, grief, and doubt intertwines with self-confidence, celebration, and awareness of XCX’s place in the musical landscape, which begins with the line: ‘I went my own way, and I did this / I am your favorite reference child.’”
“With ‘Brat,’ XCX illustrates that forging her own path will always resonate beautifully.”
