The post included a 14-second video set in a mysterious atmosphere, accompanied by the caption: “IV-XXI-MMMXXV”. This is believed to reference April 21, 2025, the anticipated date for a full announcement, coinciding with frontman Robert Smith’s 66th birthday.

Much of the speculation focuses on the significance of the “MoalW” abbreviation on the back of the iPod, leading various users on X to suggest concepts like “a film about the lost world” or “the mixes of the lost world.” This speculation ties back to the upcoming 2024 album, “Songs of the Lost World,” marking the band’s first studio release in 16 years.

The band has hinted at the possibility of a new album in recent months, sharing with Radio X that their upcoming work includes some songs performed live that didn’t make it onto “Songs of the Lost World,” along with entirely new material.
“It has three songs that are slower than on this album,” Smith added. “So, I don’t know, it may well be heavier than this.” In the same interview, he mentioned that he is already “finishing” the next album, suggesting a potential release this summer. He also noted that it features the “most sad song” from their recent recordings.
Building on “Songs of the Lost World,” he previously stated there is a third album on its way, which is “completely different.” Speaking with Absolute Radio, Daniel Perry, Smith explained: “These are really random things, such as night studio sessions. But some of them are really good; it’s just very different.”
“Songs about the lost world” achieved success in the UK charts for the first time in 32 years, receiving a five-star review from NME. The leading single “Mays” was also featured in NME’s list of the best songs of 2024. Reviews highlighted the band’s enduring magic, combining spinning synthesizers and cinematic elements with Robert Smith’s evocative lyricism.
In addition, Smith has been appointed as the curator for the 2026 publication of the Gig Gig Gig Trust series, succeeding Roger Daltrey.
