Expanding Professional Horizons

Singer-songwriter Rebecca Lucy Taylor, known as Self-esteem, is set to release her third solo album “AcDented Woman” on April 25 through Polydor, following her successes with Mercury and Brit priority pleasure in 2021.

In the years since her previous release, Taylor has made a conscious effort to enhance her professional skills, including taking on the lead role of Sally Bowles in the West End production of Cabaret alongside the Shire sisters.

In an interview with Time, she stated, “The reason why I fall into depression is that the music industry feels safe — and that safety means money. All I want is to not rely on anyone else. I want to be certain that the rug can’t be pulled out from under me like it has so many times before.”

Taking on New Challenges

“Partly, I’m desperately trying to diversify. While acting may not be a secure career, it adds another string to my bow, allowing me to rely less on the music industry,” Taylor noted.

In recent years, Taylor has taken on various acting roles including a character in the second season of Sky Atlantic’s dark comedy I Hate Susie and the role of Farra in Sky Comedy’s Strangled. She also participated in the celebrity version of the Great British Bake Off and, as she mentioned in 2022 to NME, she aspires to be a judge on Drag Race UK.

During the same interview, Taylor shared her frustration regarding the reliance on viral hits in the music industry. “Oh, please, sir, give me a hit for TikTok,” she expressed. “My label has sent me a bunch of TikToks for approval. Ugh, it makes me feel ridiculous. This cycle is exhausting.”

Currently, Taylor is in the midst of five special theatrical performances of “Complex Woman” at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London. During the first show on Wednesday (April 16), she performed the album in its entirety alongside some fan favorites.

“Thank you so much for coming to the show last night, Luvs,” Taylor shared on Instagram along with a video clip. “It felt like a true dream come true for the baby Becky.”

The artist revealed that her new album was crafted “for stadiums,” drawing inspiration from artists like Coldplay and Biffy Clyro.

“I don’t know how the album will be received, but honestly, I’m not concerned,” she added. “I did what I wanted to do. It will be a significant challenge to be a 38, 39-year-old woman releasing a pop record and achieving the success it deserves.”

The O2 Brixton Academy is set to host two shows in London, followed by a grand homecoming concert at Utilita Arena in Sheffield. Find the full list of dates and remaining tickets here.
