The singer and songwriter Rebecca Lucy Taylor, known professionally as Self-esteem, is releasing a record of 12 tracks on April 25 through Polydor, marking the continuation of her Mercury Prize-nominated album and her Brit Award-nominated work in 2021.
In January, she announced plans to unveil a new album in a stage show format at the Duke of York Theatre in London. On Wednesday evening (April 16), she performed the first of the special shows.
Self-esteem showcased the entire new album, including “Mother,” which had been performed several times during her last major tour, as well as about 11 other tracks that make up the record — all of which received enthusiastic responses.
Additionally, a number of fan-favorite tracks were performed, including “Damn Magic,” “I Do This All the Time,” and “You Forever.”
“Thank you so much for coming last night, luvs,” Taylor shared on Instagram after the show, along with a clip from the event. “A real dream come true for baby Becky. Are we going again at 7:30 tonight?”

The show was structured into four acts – Exorcism, Endurance, Men (Random), and Balance – featuring Taylor dressed in the long, restrictive outfit that decorates the cover of her new album. “Please welcome the most confusing House of Games Member and the Bake Failure, Self-esteem,” were the words that greeted her on stage.
Against a backdrop of high-energy choreography, she presented the song “69,” where she recited a list of sexual positions, along with moments where she engaged with the audience, which included Killing Eve star Jodie Comer: “If I were the frontwoman of a stadium, I would sit down with Pinta and play a few songs on the acoustic guitar, but I’m going to get up,” she remarked at one point.

Created by Taylor and designer Tony, awarded by Tom Skatt, this “unique” performance is described as an “ambitious quasi-theatrical experience that harnesses the energy and power of a concert, presented through a theatrical format.”
Skatt also directed the “Complicated Woman Live,” showcasing choreography by Stuart Rogers and musical direction by the Park T-shirt.
Self-esteem has four additional performances of “Complicated Woman” at the Duke of York, on Thursday (April 17), Friday (18), and two shows on Saturday (19).
The artist expressed that the new album was crafted “for stadiums” after drawing inspiration from bands like Coldplay and Biffy Clyro. “I don’t know how the album will be received, but I also say, ‘I don’t care,’ because I did what I wanted to do,” she said, adding, “I think this will be a massive challenge, being a 38, 39-year-old woman releasing a pop record and finding my place.”
She will embark on a tour throughout Great Britain and Ireland starting in September, visiting Birmingham, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Glasgow, Dublin, Manchester, Bristol, and Brighton.
The O2 Brixton Academy will host two shows in London, along with a significant concert returning to her hometown at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield. See the full list of dates and find remaining tickets here.
