Highlights from the Performance

On Saturday (April 12), Young, Baez, and Rogers each performed at a rally for Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Greater Los Angeles Park. Neil Young closed the event, starting with his 2019 song “Rainbow of Colors.” He then launched into “Rockin’ in the Free World,” inviting Joan Baez and Maggie Rogers to join him mid-song as they powered through “Power to the People” and “Take America” between verses.

Joan Baez’s Impactful Set

At another point during the rally, Joan Baez delivered five impactful songs. She began with the civil rights anthem “American Age of Civil Rights” and “Nobody will turn me,” followed by Phil Ochs’ “There But for Fortune” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” She wrapped up her set with “America the Beautiful” and Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” with Maggie Rogers joining her on both tracks.

Rogers then performed her own set, featuring songs like “Different Types of the World,” “Light On,” and “Alaska.”

Like Bernie Sanders, Neil Young has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, labeling him “the worst president in the history of our great country.” In 2020, he even filed a lawsuit against Trump for using his song “Rockin’ in the Free World” without permission and has shared several open letters denouncing the unauthorized use of his music.

Last year, he granted Kamala Harris permission to use his song in her campaign for vice president.

In a few months, Young will return to the UK and Europe for his world tour “Love Earth” with Chrome Hearts. This includes a performance at the Glastonbury festival at the end of June and a slot at BST Hyde Park next month. He is expected back in the USA later for a series of North American tour dates.

However, the Canadian folk legend has expressed concerns about returning to the United States after the European tour due to his criticism of the president. This concern follows reports that The Trump administration deported and detained several individuals based on their political beliefs, including pro-Palestine activists and those supporting Ukraine.

“This is true, folks,” he wrote on his blog. “If you say something negative about Trump or his administration, you could be barred from returning to the United States. If you’re Canadian, and like me, a dual citizen, who knows? We’ll all find out together.”
