“Happy Birthday” is set to be released on June 6 through AWAL and marks Stranger Things star’s expansion into music, following a brief but promising stint with the alternative rock band Calpurnia, which released a single EP before disbanding in 2019. He was also part of the Aubreys Pop duo.

Musical evolution

“Trailers After Dark” sees Wolfhard shift from the jangly pop reverie of his earlier track “Choose the Latter” to a ballad reminiscent of Elliott Smith. “Oh, my dear, don’t stop loving me” he croons.

The single debuted today (April 11) along with a music video directed by Marcus Mazzalla, featuring Wolfhard lounging on a sofa in a living room while wearing headphones, as the walls morph in shape and texture, creating a surreal stop-motion effect. Watch it below.

Reflecting on the album, Wolfhard previously shared: “I came to terms with the fact that I wrote many terrible things, but some songs I was genuinely proud of went to the Aubreys.”

“I started to realize the overarching themes in many of my other songs related to my identity, anxiety, nostalgia, childhood, and loneliness. All of this was part of a larger puzzle. I knew I wanted to create a record, but I wasn’t clear on what kinds of songs I wanted to include.”

He noted: “Music has always been something I can control. While I’m incredibly grateful for acting and all it has provided me, now it feels like a different matter as I navigate adulthood. I truly enjoy it, but when I’m alone with my guitar, writing a song brings me a distinct satisfaction.”

In a previous NME interview, Wolfhard expressed gratitude for his early success. “I’ve been working since I was a little kid, and I often have conversations where people tell me, ‘Your career is just beginning’—it’s wild because I have two conflicting thoughts…,” he laughed. “One is, ‘Really?! I’m exhausted!’ and the other, ‘If this is just the start, what’s next?!’”
