Film Overview

The upcoming film showcases the cinematographic team capturing their recent live performances in Mexico City, part of the expansive “Memento Mori” tour that spanned 2023 to 2024.

Later to be shown in theaters, the film will feature interludes and archival footage from the concert in the capital, where Dave Gahan and the band performed for nearly 200,000 enthusiastic Mexican fans. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Fernando Frias, the film aims to take viewers on a “deep musical journey.”

“Thanks to Frias’ artistic vision, this cinematic experience intertwines footage from three complete shows at the Foro Sol stadium in Mexico City, exploring the themes of Depeche Mode’s latest album “Memento Mori” and its profound connections to death and mortality in Mexican culture,” according to a new description. The film also intends to reflect on the band’s global influence and the strong bond they’ve nurtured with fans over the years.

Frias, known for his award-winning film I’m Not Here Anymore, which garnered 10 accolades at the esteemed Aryel Prize, brings his creative prowess to this project. It also follows his recent film, I Do Not Expect Anyone to Believe Me, which received critical recognition in 2023.

Further information about the Depeche Mode film is expected to be announced soon, including details about its theatrical release.

As mentioned, the three shows in Mexico City were part of the Memento Mori tour that extended through 2023 and 2024, coinciding with the album’s much-anticipated release of the same name.

This record marked the group’s first release following the tragic passing of founding member and keyboardist Andy Fletcher in May 2022, at the age of 60.

Throughout the tour, the band performed for over 3 million fans around the globe, undertaking 112 shows internationally.

In the summer of 2023, NME attended their grand performance at Twickenham Stadium in London, awarding it a glowing four-star review. “The familiar tension within the band has seemingly transformed into a brotherhood that resonates poignantly during the Palls’ wedding dance, culminating in the monolithic ‘Enjoy the Silence,” it remarked.

“What ultimately astonishes is the generosity of the band and the graceful energy they radiate. Witness this set—the audience feels truly cherished, and we hope the captivating magic of Depeche Mode continues for many years to come.”

Before the tour, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore candidly spoke to NME about adapting to life after Fletcher’s passing, expressing their desire to honor his lasting influence in “Memento Mori.”

“It’s incredibly challenging to keep the band together for so long; you realize how you lose your anchor. Fletch was a part of what we recognized as Depeche Mode for the last 40 years,” Gahan shared.

“Losing Fletch made it all feel more tangible. Everything has an end, and I don’t know when ours will be. After Fletch passed, we had to push forward; I encouraged everyone to relish what we have now and to give it our all. You truly never know if you get another chance.”

Last year, the iconic frontman again connected with NME to discuss a tribute show celebrating the life of Mark Lanegan, while sharing his thoughts on the future of Depeche Mode.

“Honestly, it took me a considerable amount of time to recover after the tour… It was phenomenal and turned out to be more than Martin and I had envisioned,” he reflected. “I spent the last five months since I returned home trying to get back to my normal life—family, friends, and doing a little writing here and there, but, honestly, I haven’t felt very inspired.”

“I even asked Martin if he had been writing, and he said, ‘No!’ That’s standard—especially after pouring so much energy into a project for several years,” he added. “It will take time. Just wait and see. I wouldn’t rule out getting together again at some point, but for now, it’s not on the agenda.”
