The artist, who is set to grace the stage at Glastonbury in June, has unveiled two “paired” tracks accompanied by a press release that marks the celebration of a new musical chapter and a shift in direction for Carner.

Exploration of Musical Styles

The songs showcase his ability to blend hip-hop with alternative music influences drawn from notable acts like Idles and Fontaines D.C. The statement emphasized that this evolution required “his whole career to build the confidence to explore” this new dimension of his music alongside hip-hop.

The A-SIDE release “everything that I need” is characterized as oscillating between “images of rage and hope”, while the B-side “in my mind” is presented as “hypnotic” and “introspective”, featuring a lyrical quest for self amidst sun-soaked sounds. This single also highlights Carner’s singing abilities more prominently.

The release notes: “Following the spontaneous formation of the group around his ‘Hugo’ tour, the lifelong dream of Carner culminates in the reflective piece ‘in my mind’, demonstrating how Loyle steps outside his comfort zone to focus on what truly matters.” The track was recorded with Loyle’s son on his shoulders, symbolically bridging generations.

Recently, it was announced that Carner will make his acting debut in Mint, a new BBC drama directed by BAFTA-nominee Charlotte Regan.

This eight-part television series is described by BBC as a “darkly comic and non-traditional drama exploring the inner life of a criminal family through a unique narrative voice”, tackling the challenge of how love can exist amidst fear from outsiders.

The synopsis positions Carner’s character at the forefront, detailing: “Central to Mint is Shannon (Emma Laird), a naive and romantically earnest daughter of a dominant criminal family. She grapples with her need for love shadowed by her gangster father Dylan (Sam Riley), her devoted yet complex mother (Laura Frayser), her older brother Luke (Lewis Gribben), and the formidable family matriarch, Grandmother Ollie (Lindsa Duncan).

“Having grown up in the surreal but constraining environment of the ‘family business’, everything takes a turn after the arrival of newcomer Ben Koyle Runar (better known as musician Loyle Carner) stepping into the spotlight.”

He further describes this project as “the tale of a soaring romance interwoven with heartbreak, love, passion, darkness, and tragedy, with Shannon navigating the delicate balance between the chaos of her family’s criminal legacy and her own pursuit of power.”

Last year, Carner was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Arts London (UAL) during a ceremony in July.

Sharing a series of moments from the event on social media, Carner reflected: “Ten years ago, amidst challenging times, I dropped out of university after my first year with a promise to my mother that if I didn’t earn us any money in six months, I would return. I never did.”

“A decade later, I’m proud to say I received an honorary doctorate from @unioftheartslondon and my children were there to witness it. So, if you know me, feel free to update my name on your phone…”

Previously, in conversation with NME, Carner talked about the significance of using his live performances to challenge toxic masculinity, reflecting on his growth since the release of his debut album.

“It’s magical, dude,” he noted, discussing the positive response from audiences. “The conversations I have after the shows, those small interactions mean the most. When kids approach me and say ‘thank you’.”
