Death Grips Confirms Activity
Following speculation about a breakup, Death Grips made a brief yet impactful statement on Instagram.
Key Members Remain Engaged
This statement reaffirms the band’s activity, signed jointly by vocalist MC Ride, whose real name is Stefan Bernett, and producer and drummer Zach Hill. Notably absent from their announcement is Andy Morin, the producer and keyboardist who originally founded the group alongside Bernett and Hill.
“Despite rumors and speculation, we are still active as a measure of death,” wrote Bernett and Hill, with the message presented artistically in permanent marker.
This announcement follows a personal message from Morin, which suggested the group’s end, made in February. He stated: “Yes, it’s over, Stefan no longer wants to continue. However, none of us can really predict what will happen next for the group.”
With Morin’s name absent from the official statement, it appears that Death Grips will persist as a duo.
Latest Releases and Performances
After releasing their debut album “The Money Store” in 2012, Death Grips put out five additional albums, with their latest being “Year of the Snitch,” released in 2018. They followed this up with the EPs “Gmail” and “The Transing Riders” the following year. In 2023, they released standalone singles “True Graulture” and “The Bug Death Grips Full Mixx.”
Later in 2023, they last performed together at Austin City Limits, further fueling rumors of a split, particularly after fans observed frequent collaborator Nick Reinhart stepping in for Morin at a show.
Their most recent performances in the UK took place in June 2023, where they played in Glasgow and London, appearing on stage at Outbreak Fest.
NME described the band’s presence at PitchFork Paris, noting: “Playing on a computer, he stretches and squats behind his set while delivering several bars. The audience seems uneasy as Death Grips’ music has a visceral impact, gripping you in the gut with an engrossing synthesis that feels unknowable yet intrinsic.”
