After several of his works appeared across London last summer, this new piece showcases familiar themes from the elusive artist, depicting a girl in black and white squeezing six gold balls. It was found sprayed on a public toilet in Clerkenwell Farringdon Green.

Authenticity and Speculation

According to a report from Metro, notes were placed next to the artwork stating that it was “forbidden” to remove or interact with it. “The authenticity testing is currently proceeding through the appropriate channels as per protocol,” it was mentioned.

Nonetheless, Banksy has yet to acknowledge this work on his Instagram, unlike previous pieces such as his London police box, leaving its legality in question.

In recent months, an anonymous artist has been making headlines with a painting titled “Raw Oil” (Vettriano) that was once owned by Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus, which sold for £4.3 million at auction in March.

Furthermore, Banksy’s personnel teams were recently captured on video while creating art, filmed by a local resident in Margate during the installation of the 2023 “Mascara Valentine’s Day.”

This interaction featured a team of artists engaging with passersby, including a video shot by a mother demonstrating how to operate a drone with one of the artists.

Unbeknownst to her, the significance of her shot became apparent as the video is now part of the second season of BBC Radio 4’s Banksy History: When Banksy Comes to the City, which aims to provide rare insights into the elusive street artist. Audio The Story of Banksy available now. The video featuring the artist’s crew at work will be released later today (April 6).

The Mystery of Banksy

The identity of Banksy has been closely guarded, sparking widespread speculation since he first gained fame in the early 2000s with theories involving Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack and Jamie Hewlett from Gorillaz.

In 2023, a long-lost interview with the artist resurfaced, revealing new insights.

The recording was from a 2003 interview that had never been released, where Banksy appeared to confirm that his name was Robbie.

Originally aired in The Story of Banksy, the interview was conducted by former BBC Arts correspondent Nigel Wrench during his Turf War show.

In this interview, a recent article in Independent mentioned his name as Robert Banks, prompting Wrench to ask if he could use his real name. When asked if he was Robert Banks, Banksy was heard saying: “This is Robbie.”
