“Carrie & Lowell” is named after Stevens’ stepfather and his mother, who struggled with depression, alcoholism, and schizophrenia, leaving the family when Sufjan was just a year old. Following her passing in 2012, Sufjan chose to create his seventh album as a poignant exploration of their fractured relationship.

In 2015, NME awarded the album 4.5 stars, stating: “Cutting to a lean and precise 44-and-a-half minutes, ‘Carrie & Lowell’ – adorned with an image of the couple on the cover – is one of Sufjan’s most profound and consistently remarkable records, but also his darkest. Such fragile fanfares as ‘Adlai Stevenson’, or festive party tunes reminiscent of 2006, reveal an alt-folk delicacy steeped in blood, grief, and devastation.”
