Camila Cabello on Feeling “Injured and Upset” Over Comparisons to Charlie XCX: “I Love This”

Camila Cabello Reflects on Comparisons

Camila Cabello confessed that she felt a “wounded” feeling similar to Charlie XCX in response to the negative reactions to her upcoming 2024 single “I LUV It.”

Fans’ Reactions and Influences

During this period, some fans of Charlie suggested that Cabello was attempting to emulate the style of the 2017 song “I Hot It.”

Charlie even fanned the flame by mimicking the video that Cabello released for “I LUV It,” featuring her own “I understood” in the background.

In a recent interview with Jerk magazine, Cabello shared her thoughts on the comparisons. “It crushed me. I don’t know how other artists handle it because negative feedback really suppresses me… It was a very strange, intense time, and I began to dissociate, which has only happened to me a few times in my life,” she stated.

She added, “At first, it hurt me, and I felt overwhelmed by the reactions, but now I am more open to hearing positive feedback. I’m still processing everything.”

“Even if nobody liked it, I would still cherish this record because I created what felt right to me. Knowing that other people connect with this music gives me a sense of understanding that I don’t know if I had before.”

“The themes I explored in this record are more complex and carry more tension, which doesn’t always fit the easily digestible pop music vibe. If it differs from ‘I love this,’ that’s okay. I always strive to push myself as a writer.”

The track will appear on her 2024 album ‘C, Xoxo,’ which NME rated three stars. “Regardless of whether you label Cabello as a ‘girl’ or not, it’s undeniable that ‘C, Xoxo’ is filled with bizarre earworms: she even mixes emo and reggaeton into a brilliant, melancholic club banger with ‘When I Cry,’” the review noted. “Some of the most anticipated pop albums of 2024 have faltered after their promotional release; this one deserves to continue bubbling to the surface for months to come.”

Last month, she announced her “Your Tour,” which will kick off in Spain on June 21, followed by shows in the UK and Ireland, including a performance at London’s Eventim Apollo on July 8 and Dublin’s The Helix on July 9. Fans can view the complete list of dates and purchase remaining tickets here.
