Insights on mental health and diagnosis
The Canadian musician of Alt-Pop fame announced the news in a post on X on Friday (March 21), mentioning: “This year they diagnosed me with ADHD/autism and realized that I was probably dyslexic, so I can’t write at all without checking spelling.”
She reflected that if she had received this diagnosis in childhood, it could have made her work “less difficult” and opened the door to medication. “So many strange obsessive ideas and motivations that I had would have been viewed as pathological, allowing me to attribute certain challenges to my conditions, but I’m grateful that I completed them,” she expressed. “It is believed that also drugs.”
Grains also shared her view that there exists a “subculture” of online accounts portraying mental health issues but characterized it as “extreme biological.” She voiced her concern about the trend of people “self-diagnosing” with mental health disorders, stating: “I feel that a huge percentage of ADHD stems from screen dependency and dopaminergic burnout.”
I have to say that there is this subculture, which, I think, “mental” stories, which, in my opinion, are similar to extreme information.

“My symptoms of ADHD were consistently worse when I wasn’t an avid reader,” she continued. “The SDVG account trying to pathologize one of the best activities a child can engage in to help with ADHD (as well as become knowledgeable about various subjects, etc.) is quite troubling.”
“I believe that the nature of this unprecedented subculture concerning mental health on social media poses significant challenges. While some contributions are valuable, many appear antithetical to personal well-being and seem intended to harm individuals.”
Additionally, Grains mentioned that she “begged” her former partner Elon Musk to protect their children from the public eye. Although they separated in 2021, they share three children, one of whom Musk took around the Oval Office as part of his role in government efficiency.
“Unfortunately, I don’t control the Internet, and I can’t erase it,” she lamented. “I urged the public and the father of my children to maintain their privacy, and I even sought legal action.”
“The public existence of my children is a serious concern for me, and I ponder solutions every day. It’s bewildering that there seems to be no way to mitigate this issue. I hope there will be a law allowing parents to insist on a veto for young children living public lives, but I’m not confident that such legal measures would be beneficial for me right now.”
She also expressed her desire for a “less toxic atmosphere” within certain circles of her fanbase.
