The Deadline is Hollywood reported that Amazon MGM Studios is producing Rosetta, a biographical film exploring the life and career of the legendary Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a gospel musician who broke boundaries and paved the way for Rock ‘N’ Roll music.

Rosetta has not yet announced a release date, nor has the director been officially named. However, Deadline has revealed that actor Forest Whitaker and Lizzo are among the producers of the biopic.

According to Deadline, Rosetta “captures the pivotal moments in Tharpe’s life—filled with innovation, passion, and secret love. As she pushes musical boundaries with her unique guitar sound, she must navigate societal restrictions, hide her affection for another woman, and ultimately transform her wedding into one of the most iconic concerts in history: the first stadium show.”

Impact on Music and Lizzo’s Career

Sister Rosetta Tharpe has influenced iconic musicians from the world of rock ‘n’ roll, including Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan, among many others.

While this will be the first feature film about Tharpe, she was previously portrayed by British musician Yola in Baz Luhrmann’s film Elvis in 2022.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was inducted into the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 in the “Early Influences” category, with notable artists like Brittany Howard and Questlove performing covers in her honor.

As for Lizzo, she has previously taken on two film roles. In 2019, she voiced the character Lydia in the animated film Ugly and made her debut in Hustlers the same year.

Lizzo recently announced that her new album, “Love in Real Life,” is “finished,” and she plans to perform on Saturday Evening on the Air. This follows the release of the title track as the lead single last month, along with the song “Still Bad.” The album’s release date has yet to be announced.
