Boygenius Achieves Major Success
Lucy Dacus stated that Boygenius was coming to a close, noting that “he was immediately ahead of our expectations.”
The trio, which includes Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, and Julien Baker, released two EPs titled “The Rest” in 2018 and 2023. Their debut LP, “2023 The Record,” made Boygenius the first British album number one to receive a luminous five-star review from NME, who described the project as “instant classics, which we hoped for.”
They also received three Grammy nominations, winning for Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance. At the 2024 ceremony, they were honored as the International Group of the Year by the Brits.
Future Plans and Break Announcement
In a December 2023 interview with NME, Boygenius expressed excitement about the possibility of future collaborations, keeping the concept of a group “a surprise” after their debut LP “The Record” was named album of the year.
Baker elaborated: “I appreciate that this group can be something transient; it isn’t tied to any one of us or to a routine we have to maintain.”
“This is our space to return to whenever we feel inspired, a sacred place rather than something we feel pressured to constantly produce.”
At the start of 2024, the trio announced their break during a secret performance in Los Angeles, telling their fans, “We are leaving for the foreseeable future. This is our last show, and we feel it.”
Dacus reflected on the timing of the group’s conclusion, stating it arrived at “the perfect time.” In a conversation with A resident of New York, she shared her thoughts on her upcoming solo album “Forever Is Sense,” explaining that their group had taken precedence over her solo endeavors. “We had substantial goals, but this was beyond our expectations. We had to adapt. I’m still in shock,” she said.
Dacus continued, saying, “We often discuss this and work through it. I feel a sense of detachment. It feels like this could all end in a moment, because if it can begin in an instant, it can also end just as quickly.”
She mentioned that the decision to take a break “was made even before the record came out.” She added, “We always said, ‘One year,'” highlighting the group’s focus on self-preservation. “We wanted to protect our friendship, our energy, and avoid feeling pressured by each other, ensuring we could maintain it for others.” Dacus believes they concluded at “the perfect time.”
The “Night Change” singer previously expressed her feelings regarding the group’s hiatus after winning their Brit award. In a social media post, Dusk shared, “I feel incredibly lucky and thankful today and most days. I will love Phoebe and Julien forever. We will miss you. A long-live Boygenius.”
