Recognition and Upcoming Projects

An indie musician from Auckland, whose real name is Sophie Brown, was recently recognized as one of the NME 100 for 2025, spotlighting emerging artists for the upcoming year.

Ratbag has a major project slated for release in 2025, and they have teased it with the latest single “Juliet & Juliet,” which narrates a story of a wild night with a partner or a close friend.

Juliet, I like your nasal ring / You would have made sure to tear it / and put it on my fourth finger now,” Brown sings, exemplifying the dark glamor that permeates the track. Watch the video here:

Speaking about the track, Ratbag stated: “Juliet and Juliet” captures the feeling of being with a partner in crime. Romantic or not, it’s about that person who just gets you and makes every night better by simply existing. Think of it as a tribute to all Juliets.”

The song follows up from January’s single “See What You Are Doing with Me,” and Ratbag is set to tour globally this year. They are also scheduled to perform at Airways in Reykjavik, Iceland, in November, with more announcements to come.

NME spoke with Brown in 2023 about the inspiration behind her project’s name. “In New Zealand, this refers to a mischievous child who doesn’t follow rules or behave,” she explained. “I used to draw on walls; unfortunately, I was that child. I know how to get on people’s nerves.”
