This fresh version features the lyrics “Sorry, etc. I committed suicide to be one of the boys / I lost my head to be one of the boys / I bit my tongue to become one of the boys / I sold my soul to be one of the boys.”

The vocals of Mayberry and Talbot blend seamlessly during the song’s chorus and bridge, intertwining raw, powerful tones with the gentle and melodic sound of the CHVRCHES frontwoman.

Insights from the Artists

In a press release about the collaboration, Mayberry expressed: “If you know me, you know how much I love Idles, so it is a great honor for me to rethink this song with Joe. We first connected during Covid when I made his Balley TV series on YouTube, and since then we’ve quietly supported each other from the sidelines.

“I mentioned to Joe last summer that I wanted to work together, and this was the song we chose. We recorded his vocals in December at Brighton Electric on one of Idles’ tour days off. I laid down my more intense vocals at home before Christmas with Sam Stuart, with my friend Paul Gallagher producing.”

Talbot remarked: “It’s both an honor and a joy to work with Lauren. I love the album, and I’m thrilled to be part of it. Long live the queen, she is the queen X.”

In a three-star review of NME on her “vicious creature,” Holly Geraty noted: “In this safe space, it explores a range of previously uncharted emotions while freely stepping outside the electronic sound of CHVRCHES.”

After touring with CHVRCHES, Mayberry told NME in 2023: “For any front person in a band, especially women, the moment you mention ‘solo material,’ people become quite upset. I often hear, ‘I’m not breaking up the band, guys, just so you know…’”

“We’ve been fortunate that fans have been so supportive that they don’t want to see us break up. I feel grateful, but I make sure to reassure them – ‘Just give us a couple of years, everything will be fine.’ The last group album was “Screen Violence,” released in 2021.

Later this month, Mayberry is set to kick off a six-show tour across Great Britain, starting with a performance at her hometown’s Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow on March 20.
